The operation pictured in this photograph is called "stringing the cover to a main plane" and is one of the many jobs carried out by members of the women's auxiliary Australian air force (WAAAF) on active service.

Much of the maintenance work at air force stations is now done by the 

WAAAF who, in such jobs as fabric working, prove more consistently efficient than the men. The girls in this photograph are (left to right):- Corporal jean Hamilton of Brisbane, ex dressmaker. Aircraftwoman (ACW) Shirley Britter of Victoria, ex machinist. ACW Mary Gourley of Victoria, ex machinist. ACW Alma McGlinn of W.A., ex tailoress.

Melbourne, Vic. C. 1942. A WAAAF cook's assistant with a tray of sliced bread for the dining room at No. 1 WAAAF Training Depot, Malvern. Melbourne, Vic. 1943-04-30. Portrait of Under Officer Ruby Hudson, WAAAF, at RAAF Headquarters, Victoria Barracks. A highly trained 
and experienced cook, Under Officer Hudson had accompanied a dietitian Flight Officer Alison Allen WAAAF to Port Moresby for the period 1943-12-22 to 1944-01-20 to advise RAAF, Army and United States catering staff on the preparation, cooking and presentation of the tinned and dried foods that made up the bulk of the daily rations in the area.
1943-08-20. Portrait of WAAAF Corporal B. F. Edmonston who, on 1941-03-15, was given the service number 90,000 as the first airwoman to be enlisted into the WAAAF. 

She was subsequently commissioned and held the rank of Section Officer.
